My First Made To Measure Experience with Indochino: Here's What I Learned

A few months ago, I pursued my first attempt as it pertains to procuring my first made to measure suit. In striving towards this, it was only appropriate that I visited one of the world's most significant and accessible custom clothing companies for men everywhere - Indochino

I have had a custom suit made for me before so visiting Indochino's shop for the first time (which I recommend doing versus the online made to measure process), I had an idea of how things were supposed to run. My assumptions could not have been any more wrong and for that alone, my first one hour made to measure experience was unforgettable.

Here's what I learned:

  • There is a difference between Bespoke and Made To Measure Suiting

A Bespoke suit is handmade and a made to measure suit is cut by a machine from an already existing pattern to fit the customer's size. Oh yes, there are layers to this menswear thing.

  • The Importance of being decisive - Know What You Want

This was my favorite part because it is based on preference. No one can tell you the right or wrong way to do this. Through my made to measure process, what I learned to love about the experience is the amount of control I had over the design aspect of my suiting. I made every decision that went into my suit including color, buttons, fabric, monograms, lapels, pockets, lining, shirting and more. It was truly one of a kind especially since Indochino has over 200 different high quality fabrics, and plenty of customization options to create your own look with. I did my best to maximize my custom details. The customization aspect of the Made To Measure experience is of no use if you choose to model your personalized suit based on off the rack models.

Due to the fact that the process of selection can be a bit overwhelming, it is important to know what you want otherwise, your fitting could extend longer than you originally intended for. Being decisive should be easier if you already have wearing experience with suiting.

  •  The Importance of a professional's opinion - The Power of Conversation

Sometimes, we tend to think we know it all especially when it comes to personal style. I mean, it makes sense - it's personal. However, seeking out ideas or recommendations from the tailor or shop keeper can act as a great tool when it comes to stirring your choices in the right direction.

  • The Importance of Timing - Good Things Take Time

Part of what surprised me about the made to measure experience was the amount of time I had to endure to receive the final product. Made to measure suits take time. Sometimes, a month or two so it is very important to be accommodating. If you're looking for a suit to wear the following week to a graduation ceremony or society soiree, made to measure is not the way to go. Starting in mid February, my experience included three one hour plus fittings which we used up. For measurements and customization, the other for final alterations. I went back to a fitting in - and received the suit in - . The wait was well worth it.

The collection is available both in store and online.
